South African Forum of Civil Engineering Contractors (SAFCEC)
Wednesday, 20 March 2019

(Request for urgent Cabinet pronouncement and action in regard to violent site disruptions)

The South African Forum of Civil Engineering Contractors confirms that yesterday, 19 March 2019, the Chief Executive Officer, Mr Webster Mfebe, escalated the above matter to President Cyril Ramaphosa, following a letter of 18 March 2019, addressed to the Honourable Minister of Finance Tito Mboweni, and copied to the Ministers of Public Works; Economic Development; Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation; Energy; Police; and Transport.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has infused the nation with renewed hope when he introduced his signature vision of a New Dawn, which is predicated on the twin cardinal pillars of Renewal and Rebuilding. The Construction industry is fully supportive of this, especially in light of further reinforcement of this vision on 21 September 2018, where he stated “The stimulus and recovery plan prioritises infrastructure spending as a critical driver of economic activity”.

The current crisis facing the South African construction industry is regrettable and is hereby condemned in the strongest possible terms as it is an antithesis to the collective efforts of embarking on a renewal and rebuilding path for South Africa.

We await government's response thereto.
