The South African Forum of Civil Engineering Contractors (SAFCEC) expresses our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and sympathies to those injured in the tragic collapse of the pedestrian bridge under construction over the M1 highway near Grayston Drive in Sandton, Johannesburg. We commend the efforts of our member, Murray & Roberts for the swift action by the project team undertaken immediately following the incident; the exemplary efforts of Emergency Services; as well as the leadership shown by Murray & Roberts CEO, Mr Henry Laas, who personally undertook to be present on the scene to assist where possible. We have full confidence that a comprehensive investigation into the root cause of the tragedy will be conducted timeously and comprehensively.
SAFCEC further commends the leadership shown by first citizen of the City of Johannesburg, the Executive Mayor of the City, Mr Parks Tau, who led from the front through personally undertaking to be present on the scene and facilitating alternatives for M1 road users. We appeal to all citizens to allow the Department of Labour; the City of Johannesburg; and our member, Murray & Roberts, adequate opportunity to conduct their investigation without speculation on the cause of this tragedy until facts come to light.
As an employer body, SAFCEC was pleased to be present on site along with the National Union of Mine Workers (NUM) as part of the delegation at the time of the reopening of the M1 highway. We hope that the enquiry into this tragedy will be concluded shortly and that all affected parties receive the best possible outcome in the circumstances.
