Invitation to construction industry stakeholders to help shape the content of the Building and Civil Construction Syllabus for FET Colleges
In response to the current shortage of skills, the listed construction companies have undertaken to assist the Department of Education by revising and improving the learning content of the Building and Civil Construction syllabus for FET (Further Education and Training) Colleges.
A project manager, who reports to a working committee, has been assigned the task of coordinating the feedback from industry and soliciting the skills needs of industry in the form of ";employability factors"; that would make FET graduates immediately useful to employers.
Anyone who wishes to make a contribution or simply recommend new subject content is welcome to contact Rod Rankine on 083-309-4258 or email at rod.rankine@telkomsa.net.
FET Colleges introduced the new National Certificate (Vocational) in January 2007. Over 2400 learners enrolled at NQF Level 2 to study the Building and Civil Construction programme. In 2008 and 2009, this NCV programme will also be offered at Level 3 and Level 4 respectively.
In addition to three compulsory fundamental subjects, there are four compulsory core subjects which include the following:
- Drawings, Setting-out, Quantities and Costing,
- Plant and Equipment
- Materials
- Construction Supervision (Level 4 only)
Learners must also choose a minimum prescribed number of elective subjects from the following options:
- Carpentry and Roofwork
- Concrete Structures (which includes formwork and steel reinforcing)
- Masonry and Tiling
- Roads
- Plumbing
The Department has emphasised that the content of the above subjects must encourage the development of cognitive skills for an integrative approach to learning.
Current Subject and Assessment guidelines, for each of the above subjects, can be viewed on http://www.thutong.org.za/ |
