The Civil Engineering Indices (Extracts from the Consumer Price Index and the Producer Price Index as published by STATSSA)
Dear Member
STATSSA published the January 2009 CPI index with a new base year (2008) and a reviewed basket. To link the old CPI index for the regions which is used for labour in the CPAF formula to the new CPI index we used conversion factors to enable old and new indices to be compatible. New indices with a base 2008 = 100 are also included in the new spreadsheet. The data for the new indices will only be available from January 2008 onwards. For the old data, indices start from 1997. New region names are indicated in the yellow blocks and base years are indicated in the green blocks. Please make sure that you use the correct base year indices for your formulae calculation.

Please note that we are aware of the Diesel Price being the same over the last few months - we have brought the problem to the attention on STATSSA.
Revision in the Tables 11 and 12 of the PPI
PPI came out on Thursday the 26th of March and some notable differences were witnessed in indices closely monitored by the construction and civil engineering industry. Changes in some of the indices included changes in figures reported during the January PPI for the fuel price – and material indices. These changes are:

These changes in January reported figures sparked some calls from members requesting more information from STATSSA regarding this matter. According to STATSSA changes were necessary since some variance and discrepancies were picked up in the data. The revised figures are furthermore seen as the official figures by STATSSA and should be used in contract escalation formulas and estimations.
An update regarding the new CPI and conversion factors have been completed and will be placed on the SAFCEC website shortly. Please make sure to read the instructions before attempting to use these figures.
